Compound of two names for the smallest bonito: vonoz + gaco vonoz: from Ottoman Turkish ونوس vonos, from Greek βόνος vónos (small mackerel or bonito); in Turkish a general term for the small fry of mackerel, chub mackerel and sardine gaco: origin uncertain; recorded in İstanbul as torik yavrusu (young bonito) (Uysal 2011)
