Origin disputed ↳ Traditionally derived from θύνω thýnō (to rush, dart), for the fish's speed ↳ A Phoenician source has also been proposed, compared with Hebrew תַּנִּין tannīn (sea monster, large water animal) and attested in Punic as the Island of Tunnies ↳ Borrowed into Latin as thunnus (tuna), whence Italian tonno and Modern Greek τόνος tónos
