Origin unknown ↳ Derivative of μαίνη maínē (blotched picarel), which has no accepted etymology ↳ Strömberg's hesitant connection with μαίνομαι maínomai (to rage), reading it as the wild raging fish, is not established; comparison with Russian мень men (burbot) and Sanskrit मीन mīna (fish) is extremely doubtful
Blotched picarel. Small sparid of the Mediterranean, Black Sea and eastern Atlantic from Portugal to the Canaries, reaching about 25 cm. A protogynous hermaphrodite that feeds on zooplankton over sand, mud, rock and Posidonia beds at 30-130 m; minor commercial value.
