From Medieval Greek χηβάδα chēváda, from Ancient Greek χήμη chḗmē (gaping; clam, mussel), origin uncertain but usually taken as a verbal noun to χάσκω cháskō (to gape, yawn) from PIE *ǵʰeh₁y- (to gape, be wide open). The prothetic α- developed from the phrase μια χηβάδα. Correct spelling: αχηβάδα.
